Student moving checklist | What to pack for university

Congratulations! 

You’re about to start one of the most exciting chapters of your life: university.

Most likely, this is your first time moving out of your parents’ or guardians’ home. 

You might be arriving from another city in the UK or travelling from abroad, but getting ready to move into student accommodation can feel overwhelming. That’s why we’ve put together the ultimate student moving checklist to make sure you have all the essentials (and a few extras) and help you settle in, feel comfortable, and start your student life on the right foot.

Everyday essentials

It’s best to start with the things you’ll use every single day. These are your absolute must-haves. Things like: 

• Clothing & shoes: Pack for all seasons (UK weather can be unpredictable). Don’t forget pyjamas, gym gear, and a smart outfit for formal events. 

• Bathroom essentials: Towels, toothbrush and toothpaste, shower gel, shampoo, deodorant, razors, cosmetics, and a hairdryer. 

• Bedding: Bed linen, duvet, pillows. It’s always a good idea to bring a mattress cover too (for hygiene). 

• Cleaning supplies: Washing detergent, dishwashing soap, bin bags, surface cleaner, sponges. 
   

Kitchen essentials

If you’re in self-catered accommodation, they sometimes provide appliances and kitchen basics, so check what’s included before you buy. At a minimum, you’ll likely need: 

• A frying pan and a saucepan 

• Chopping board, knives, spatula, and wooden spoon 

• Plates, bowls, glasses, mugs, and cutlery 

• Sieve or colander 

Optional (but useful): toaster, kettle, microwave, Tupperware, and reusable water bottles. 

Many supermarkets and home stores sell student kits at a reasonable price, with all the essentials you need.  

Study essentials

You’re here to learn (as well as to have fun!), so don’t forget: 

• Laptop and charger (plus a case or backpack) 

• Phone and charger 

• Extension leads and adapters (international plug adapters for overseas students) 

• Textbooks, notepads, pens, folders, and stationery 

Important documents

You’ll be asked for these often, especially in your first few weeks. Keep all of these safe in a folder: 

• Passport/ID card and visa/BRP (for international students) 

• University acceptance letter 

• Tenancy agreement & inventory 

• Bank account details or student loan confirmation 

• Insurance details (travel, contents, or health) 

• Doctor’s registration information (don’t forget you also get a free virtual GP and wellbeing support when you are guaranteed by Housing Hand!)
   

Fun extras

University life is about making connections. A few extras can help break the ice: 

• Deck of cards or board games 

• Fancy dress items (you’ll thank us later during Freshers’ Week!) 

• Football, frisbee, or other outdoor games 

• Bluetooth speaker for music nights with new friends

Comfort & décor 

Your student room will likely be pretty plain, so bring a few things to make it feel like home: 

• Photos of family and friends 

• Posters, string lights, or a small plants

• Favourite blanket or cushion 

• Small décor pieces that make you feel comfortable 
   

Moving day logistics 

Once you’re packed, its important you don’t overlook the practical side of moving too. Think about: 

• How will you get there? Car, train, coach, or flight? 

• Do you need to book a removal van or a courier? 

• Will you need help carrying bags upstairs (note that some halls have no lifts)? 

• How much can you realistically bring with you? 

We suggest you plan early to avoid stress on the day. 

And don’t forget… 

These might not be essential on day one, but they’ll soon become important: 

• Internet provider (if not included in your accommodation) 

• Small toolkit (screwdriver, scissors, tape, maybe even some sewing essentials – useful more often than you think) 

Moving into student accommodation is a big milestone, but with the right preparation, it can be exciting rather than stressful.
